Focus and Scope
AS-SHUFFAH: Islam and Digital Humanities Review is committed to publishing original research that contributes significantly to interdisciplinary scholarly discourse, particularly at the intersections of Islam, digital humanities, and social equality. The journal encourages rigorous and critical studies addressing digital inequality, inclusive education, historical narratives, and anthropological perspectives that amplify marginalized voices. It welcomes diverse scholarship from various geographical and cultural contexts, exploring how Islamic values can address complex challenges in the contemporary digital age.
AS-SHUFFAH invites scholars, researchers, and academics to submit high-quality manuscripts examining the dynamic relationships between Islam, technology, and modern society. Areas of interest include Islamic digital ethics, inclusive education, critiques of structural inequality, and historical reinterpretations that advance social justice and human dignity in the context of globalization.
The journal's focus and scope are organized into four principal research areas:
1. Islamic Socio-Anthropology and History
This area explores human behavior, evolving social structures, and historical narratives that shape Muslim identities from the past to the digital era. The journal welcomes critical historiography and socio-anthropological research that challenges dominant narratives, examines structural biases, and investigates how traditions, authority, and social identities evolve in response to modernity.
2. Islam and Digital Humanities
This area examines how digital technologies and media influence religious practices, educational models, and the cultural representation of Islam in digital spaces. Topics include the transformation of religious rituals, Islamic digital ethics, online religious discourse, and the digitization and preservation of historical archives and classical manuscripts. The journal welcomes research investigating both the opportunities and challenges of technological developments for religious authenticity, cultural heritage, and human values.
3. Social Justice and Equality
This area focuses on theoretical and empirical research addressing educational inclusion, gender equality, human rights, and efforts to bridge the digital divide, particularly within Muslim communities. The journal encourages studies on marginalized populations, social policy, humanitarian advocacy, distributive justice, and initiatives that promote a more equitable, inclusive, and humane society.
4. Islamic Education and Ecopedagogy
This area examines curriculum innovation, educational leadership, and teaching and learning practices in pesantren and other Islamic educational institutions, with particular attention to environmental awareness and sustainability. Through ecopedagogical approaches, the journal promotes research on integrating Islamic values and ecological responsibility into education to prepare learners to address environmental challenges and contribute to planetary sustainability.
Through these four research areas, AS-SHUFFAH seeks to strengthen interdisciplinary scholarship, advance social justice, and promote the common good (maslahah). The journal is committed to fostering academic dialogue grounded in critical thinking, intellectual integrity, ethical responsibility, and humanitarian values.
Published under the auspices of Yayasan Pesantren As-Shuffah Rembang, AS-SHUFFAH aspires to connect Islamic intellectual traditions with contemporary social, cultural, educational, and technological developments. The journal welcomes scholars, researchers, educators, and critical thinkers to contribute original perspectives that support a more just, inclusive, dignified, and sustainable future.
