Authors are required to carefully follow the guidelines below when preparing their manuscripts for submission to AS-SHUFFAH: Islam and Digital Humanities Review. Manuscripts that do not comply with these requirements may be returned to the authors for revision, potentially delaying the editorial and publication process.

1. Word Count Requirements

Research articles must contain 5,000–8,000 words, including the main text and excluding the reference list.

2. General Manuscript Requirements

All manuscripts must meet the following requirements:

  • Be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).

  • Be written in English or Indonesian. Indonesian authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts in Indonesian, while authors may also submit manuscripts in English.

  • Use an objective and scholarly academic writing style.

  • Follow the journal's manuscript formatting and citation requirements.

  • Be submitted exclusively through the journal's Online Journal System (OJS).

3. Originality of the Manuscript

Only original manuscripts will be considered for publication. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication by another journal or publisher. Authors must ensure that their submissions represent original scholarly contributions and comply with applicable standards of academic integrity.

4. Previously Published and Revised Manuscripts

AS-SHUFFAH: Islam and Digital Humanities Review does not accept manuscripts that merely reproduce or slightly revise works previously published elsewhere. Manuscripts must contain substantial original contributions. Where previously published material is reused, it must be properly cited, appropriately quoted, and used in accordance with applicable copyright requirements.

Authors are responsible for disclosing any substantial overlap between their submissions and their previously published works.

5. Copyright and Publication Agreement

As part of the publication process, authors must complete the required author declaration and publication agreement through the procedures specified by the journal. Authors must ensure that they have the necessary rights and permissions for all materials included in their manuscripts.

Any applicable copyright and licensing terms must be followed in accordance with the journal's policies.

6. Plagiarism

AS-SHUFFAH takes plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and other forms of academic misconduct seriously. All submitted manuscripts may be screened using appropriate similarity-detection tools before being considered for publication.

Authors must properly cite all sources and ensure that borrowed ideas, quotations, data, images, and other materials are appropriately acknowledged. Manuscripts found to contain plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct may be returned for revision or rejected in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policy.

7. Title

The manuscript title must be concise, specific, informative, and relevant to the study. The title must not exceed 15 words.

Titles should use title case, with the first letter of major words capitalized. Articles, prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions are generally written in lowercase unless they appear at the beginning or end of the title or subtitle. Titles must not be written entirely in capital letters.

8. Headings and Subheadings

Headings and subheadings must be clear, concise, and logically organized. Authors may adapt heading titles to suit the content and structure of their manuscripts.

Headings and subheadings must not be numbered. For example, use Introduction rather than 1. Introduction. Authors should maintain consistent formatting throughout the manuscript and follow the journal's manuscript template, where applicable.

9. Images, Figures, and Tables

A manuscript may contain no more than 20 images. Figures, photographs, and other visual materials must be clear, relevant, and of sufficient quality for publication.

Image files must be submitted separately in TIFF (.tif) format, where applicable. Tables and figures must be appropriately numbered, titled, and referenced in the main text.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted images or other materials belonging to third parties and for providing appropriate acknowledgments.

10. References and APA Style

All information, arguments, and findings derived from other sources must be supported by appropriate in-text citations. Each manuscript must include a minimum of 20 references.

References and in-text citations must follow the American Psychological Association (APA) style, 7th edition. Authors are encouraged to use reference management software, such as Mendeley or Zotero, to ensure consistency and accuracy.

Manuscripts with incomplete, inaccurate, or improperly formatted references may be returned to the authors for correction before further editorial consideration.

11. Self-Citation

Authors may cite their previously published works when relevant to the research and necessary to establish the scholarly context of the manuscript. However, self-citations should be used objectively and only when they genuinely contribute to the discussion.

Self-citations should not exceed 50% of the total references in a manuscript. Authors must avoid excessive or unnecessary self-citation practices.

12. Equations

Mathematical equations and symbols should be prepared using the equation editor available in Microsoft Word whenever possible. If additional mathematical formatting is required, authors may use compatible equation-editing software, such as MathType.

All equations must be legible, properly formatted, and numbered where necessary. Symbols and variables should be explained clearly in the text.

13. Copyediting and Proofreading

Authors must ensure that manuscripts have been thoroughly edited and proofread before submission. Manuscripts should demonstrate appropriate academic language, grammatical accuracy, spelling, punctuation, and clarity of expression.

Manuscripts submitted to the journal are expected to be complete and ready for scholarly evaluation. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and quality of the language used throughout their submissions.

14. Manuscript Formatting and Publication Layout

The journal's manuscript templates and formatting guidelines are intended to standardize manuscript preparation and facilitate the editorial and production processes. The submitted manuscript format does not necessarily reflect the final layout of the published article.

The final publication layout and design are determined by the journal's editorial and production requirements.

15. Manuscript Submission

All manuscripts must be submitted through the official Online Journal System (OJS) of AS-SHUFFAH: Islam and Digital Humanities Review. Manuscripts submitted by email or through other channels will not be considered unless explicitly authorized by the editorial team.

By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that the work complies with the journal's submission requirements, publication ethics, and applicable editorial policies.

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
